March Madness and Social Networking

The Brain Yard video on "March Madness and Social Networking" Eric Lundquist and Butch Stern This video article is addressing the fact that sports can be used to be a power house in social networking. Both Eric Lundquist and Butch Stern explain how every sports game is an event for marketing. Baseball seasons are 160 games long, NHL and Basketball seasons are 82 games long and if companies can market each game like a sponsored event they can create a huge revenue off of these sports. Using sports to market a business can be just as effective as commercials on TV. Having advertisements and sponsored events at arenas and stadiums can be an overlooked source of networking sometimes. They also explain that sports teams already have huge target markets and it is easy access for companies to new demographics with just an advertisement at a game. Also, the fans at games are excited and intrigued at the games which in turn help create focus on your product if there is an advertisement between play or on the field. The use of twitter and Facebook for live feeds in arenas or restaurants are also a good tool to help increase focus on certain businesses. Butch Stern addresses the fact that all publicity is still publicity. I believe for a restaurant if there is a live feedback on twitter of how your food is, it will make the chef's and waiters work extra hard so they are not in turn held accountable for any bad publicity that might turn up. This social networking can help businesses run smoother in the long run. I believe that sports and social networking work perfectly together. If you can effectively use a social networking site along with a sporting event to advertise or make your business relevant it will work a lot better than some of the other advertisement techniques that are being used today. I believe there is over a billion people on social networking sites and also millions who go to sporting events each day! That is a huge target market that could be easily accessed without having too much work involved or having the fear of a viewer changing the channel during commercials. Live advertisements are the best way to gain a fans attention and I believe it can in turn truly help a business.
