Facebook password isn't your boss' business
CNN Tech "ACLU: Facebook password isn't your boss' business" by Doug Gross March 22, 2012 Blog #4
This article talks about how some bosses are now asking their employees to reveal their social network passwords. These bosses are looking to search through their employees’ Facebook accounts and other social network accounts in order to try and find suspicious evidence and or more background information on the people that work for them. This is a huge invasion of privacy in my opinion. When it comes to interviews, I’ve been taught that the interviewer is not allowed to ask me anything about my relationship status, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, etc. The interviewer is also not allowed to ask me about my family and whether I have children or not, but now my boss is allowed to access my Facebook page and other social media accounts of mine that are available to search? All of the information that is not allowed to be discussed in an interview can be accessed through my Facebook page. The bosses are allowed to search through your wall posts, messages, photos, and anything really because they have access to all of the information on someone’s Facebook page by having the password in their possession. Someone in the article talks about how they feel about the act, "I consider it a violation of personal privacy," one user wrote. "Will the next step be to request a key to my house?" This statement is very true and scary at that. Honestly, what will be the next step taken by bosses and people with authority? It is kind of sad to see how much people are not trusted by other people. The lengths that these people with power go to in order to unravel personal information on their employees is frightening. The government needs a search warrant in order to access your private information, key word here is private. Your Facebook information is kept private from everyone unless you personally friend the person or accept their friend request. It is someone’s right to keep this information hidden unless there is obvious danger at hand then the government should be allowed to interfere and search the social media account, this is my opinion. Bosses however, should have no right to ask for their employees’ passwords to their personal accounts. It is just wrong and some states already are on board saying that it is illegal. I believe that every state should believe it is an illegal act.
