10 Steps to Smartphone Safety
By Eric Zeman, Information Week
February 18th, 2012
The article is mainly focusing on 10 key steps to keeping your phone and all your valuable information on that phone safe. The world is very technologically oriented and the smartphones that we have today can literally have ALL of our information on it. Ranging from contacts, to banking statements, to pictures, our phones have our lives on them. To keep our phones safe writer Eric zeman tells us to keep our phone locked, encrypt our data, turn location services off, keep our iphone updated, don't let strangers use our phones, use find my iphone app or similar apps, don't leave your phone unattended, watch attachments on e-mails, and don't download apps from weird places. I believe that these are 10 key steps to keeping our smartphones and more importantly our information safe. We need to keep very close watch on our phones because I have heard many stories of phones being missing and then bills or money has been withdrew from their accounts. I would add a few more steps to these 10. I would download apps that specifically don't allow users to view or open certain apps without a password. Also, I would tell smartphone users to clear their phone history after use. There are many techniques to keep smartphones safe and I believe that this article is very helpful for smartphone users. We should all listen and abide by these steps to keep ourselves safe.
Many believe that smartphones are unnecessary and are nothing but trouble. I see what they are saying but I do believe that to keep moving forward with technology and a nation as a whole, smartphones are necessary. Smartphones help with work, school and many other things. Productivity in these areas increase with the aid of a smartphone. I can not see this world without smartphones. We need to accept this, and strive to just make it safer instead of boycotting it as a whole. Smartphones will help our nation and will also help us as individuals. We need these phones.

I think Eric Zeman definitely does have some good tips in smartphone safety. Like much of society, I also use my smartphone for practically everything. I often wonder what I would do if my phone was ever lost or stolen, so these were good tips to make sure none of my information gets stolen. I agree with you on the topic that smartphones are unnecessary. I wish I grew up in a time where there were no cell phones because I have become to reliant on my phone and all its technology. Although I wish I didn’t have to have one, you are correct when you say they are necessary for keeping up with technology. It is very convenient to be able to do almost everything on my smartphone, but at the same time it is risky for people. Those were great tips for protecting ourselves, and I think you did a great job explaining them and also stating your opinion on how smartphones are both a hassle and a necessity at the same time.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree with the steps that this article asks smartphone users to take in order to keep our information private. The find my iphone app would be a great idea for iphone users to download because it will lock the phone and shut it down if our phone gets in to the wrong hands. I also agree with Mike that there should be apps that only allow the owner of the phone to open or view the apps. Password protected apps would be very useful. Also, everyone should have a password protected phone. There is also an app where it will take a picture of you and the phone will recognize you when trying to activate the phone and it won't let anyone but you use the device first. It is a pretty good app that I feel like people who are really nervous about losing their information should use.
ReplyDeleteI found Michael Schwartz article very interesting because I have recently received an IPhone and I have never heard of any of these things from happening, which has me nervous now. I mean some of the safety tips are common sense like, do not let people use your phone or let the phone out of your sight, and I would never do my banking on my phone. But I did not know that you could turn off your location so that you can prevent your information from getting stolen and I did not know you could even look at your history on the IPhone. This is very informative blog because I am clueless about the IPhone; I just use it to play games with my friends and the usual texting and calling people. The only thing I disagree about is when he says that he cannot see the world without smartphones. I am one of those people that can live without the smartphone because I do not need everything at the palm of my hand. I just need a phone to text and call.
